Why is hearing essential to acquire spoken language?

The ability of humans to speak comes from their sense of hearing. The world around us is filled with all types of sounds and people’s voices. A baby develops the ability to speak only after they have been exposed to sounds and language in their immediate environment. In most cases, the people in their immediate environment are the parents, family members, and friends. Research has shown that babies can start listening when they are in their mother’s wombs, from 5 months of pregnancy. Unlike a baby with normal hearing, a baby with hearing loss does not hear the sounds and speech spoken by the people around. Depending on the type of hearing loss, the sound vibrations may be blocked in the outer, middle, or inner ear. In the case of issues in the inner ear, either due to loss of hair cells or due to problems in the auditory nerve, electrical signals from the inner ear are not transmitted to the brain. As a result, the brain does not learn how to recognize the sounds. Since the baby does not hear anything, it makes no attempt to reproduce the sounds, and therefore, does not learn to speak fluently.
