If there is damage to the cochlea-hair cells-auditory nerve, brain cannot receive signals.
It leads to Sensorineural Hearing Loss.
POSSIBLE CAUSES
- Viral infections (such as rubella), during pregnancy
- Exposure to X-rays during first three months of pregnancy
- RH incompatibility
- Premature birth, low birth weight
- Marriage between close blood relations
- Lack of oxygen supply to the new-born due to inability to breathe normally resulting in blueness of baby
- Infectious diseases like measles, mumps, meningitis, TB
- Harmful drugs eg: streptomycin, gentamycin to treat diseases like jaundice
